Za tem, ko je kraj blagoslovil arhat Nyimagung, je Rinchen Zangpo napovedal, da bo tu nastala izjemna religijska skupnost, od koder izvira tudi samo poimenovanje pozneje nastale gompe, namreč Spituk (vzoren', 'zgleden', 'izjemen'). Glavni tempelj je v 11. stoletju zgradil Od-de, kralj Gugeja in starejši brat lame Lha Changchub Od. V času vladarja Trags-bum-deja, v 15. st. je samostan obnovil lama Lhawang Lodos in uvedel red gelug, a bolj verjetno je, da je to storil Nam-mk'a'-ba.
